Loft Insulation Advice
Added On: 30/11/1999
What is loft insulation and how does it help reduce your energy use?
Loft insulation traps heat rising within the house with a layer of insulating material that acts as a blanket.
Loft insulation is a simple and effective way of reducing your impact on the environment by reducing your energy use by up to a tonne of CO2 each year, and it should reduce your bills by about £100 per year.
You can add loft insulation yourself too, just buy the insulation and the suggested safety equipment (see below), and get to work!
Safety
- Insulation materials can irritate the throat and skin, and should be installed with care.
- Wear a suitable dust mask to avoid throat irritation.
- Wear protective gloves to prevent irritation to your hands.
- Wear a long-sleeved top and trousers, even if it is a hot day.
- Only open the insulation package or bag in the loft, and keep the loft hatch or door closed.
- Work with the materials gently to prevent the fibres getting in the air.
- Bag up any waste in the loft before moving it through the house.
- Wash your clothes and gloves separately from your normal wash after you've finished, and dispose of the face mask.
