What is a combination (combi, storage) boiler?

A combination (combi, storage) boiler is a normal combi boiler with a water storage cylinder tank added, which means that there are less problems with flow rate reduction, which is a common problem with non-storage combi boilers.

  • The larger the tank, the better the water flow rate. With a combination (combi, storage) boiler you should be able to use 2 taps at the same time with a good flow of hot water to both.

The main advantage of this system over a standard non-combi or instantaneous combi boiler and storage tank is that the hot water never runs out, because the water is heated instantly as required, and can cope with more taps running at once.

Advantages to a combination (combi, storage) boiler

  • The energy saving design means combi boilers have hugely improved efficiency, making your home a greener place to be. Exhaust gases from the boiler are used to heat the water, unlike other boiler designs, where the exhaust gas is wasted.
  • Combination (combi, storage) boilers give instant hot water from taps and showers at mains pressure, with no need for a water pump.
  • A combination (combi, storage) boiler can help lower your water heating bills due to the energy-efficient design.
  • Their compact size means that a combination (combi, storage) boiler can be squeezed into those tight spaces, giving you more room in your home.
  • Most modern combination (combi, storage) boilers are designed to be easy to service, due to the single location of the boiler, so you can keep those servicing and repair bills down.
  • The hot water delivery is improved over a combination (combi, non-storage) boiler due to the fitting of a water storage cylinder tank, so you can run 2 hot water taps at once.

Disadvantages to a combination (combi, storage) boiler

  • Combination (combi, storage) boilers can't provide as good a flow rate as standard water tank boiler designs, especially in winter, and are suitable for smaller homes (ideally 1 to 2 bedrooms).
  • Even with the addition of a water tank, a combination (combi, storage) boiler isn't ideal for homes with 3 bedrooms or more.
